Not sew good

I do not sew well. I like to attempt, usually. I did make my son a quilt, curtains, and re-covered his glider chair a couple of years ago. I’m not going to claim I did a great job, because I totally didn’t. I did a passable job. That quilt and the curtains are still in use currently and have not fallen apart, even despite being washed, so that’s at least something.

I’ve sewed a few other little things here and there- a couple of dresses for Hailey and some little bags/purses, a couple of sock monkeys, several aprons. They came out pretty nice.

So I got all full of myself and thought maybe I should make myself a dress. I picked out a pattern, it said “EASY!” on the front.

Whatever, lying pattern.

Well- ok, let’s be honest here. It was fairly basic and straightforward on HOW to sew the dress. That part I got, and did and yes, it was pretty easy. The fitting part? Not so easy. The skirt and back looked pretty good. It was a halter style, and… well… let’s just say that if I’d worn the dress as is, I’d be getting a ticket for indecent exposure. Whose boobs would that thing have covered?!

So basically the dress was a fail. I tried to fix it but there really wasn’t anything I could do, at least not at my skill level. I am incredibly glad that I decided to make it using cheap Wal-Mart fabric instead of buying something that was $9/yard.

On the positive? I learned how to put in a zipper. And I think I even did it right (on the third try). At least there’s that!

My dining room and kitchen curtains were actually a shower curtain. The print just matched the palm tree theme I had going on in there at the time so I cut up a couple of shower curtains and did a very quick and shoddy job of turning them into curtains. It worked, I guess. A couple of weeks ago, I decided I was tired of the palm trees and ordered some new fabric for curtains. Some gorgeous, fairly spendy fabric. Luckily, my mommy came to help me with the curtains and they turned out FABULOUS! I love them. And I’m now working on a little mural-type project in the dining room and once that is done, expect pictures.

Because I sewed something that actually turned out. !!!!

Quickie

I made myself an apron yesterday, so naturally both kids started begging for aprons also! I let them pick the fabric out of my stash themselves. They love them! Keegan fell asleep in his on the couch last night and then first thing this morning, he wanted me to put it on him. (I didn’t get pictures of me in my apron because… well… I didn’t shower yesterday, so ew.

I don’t know whether it’s my internet connection or my laptop, but it’s going unbearably slow this morning. I sort of want to cry. I have some other pictures and stuff to upload but I don’t think I can handle it this morning, I’ll probably wind up throwing things at the computer. It’s already annoying enough that it’s about a full line behind me on typing right now.

I will attempt to get a couple of recipes posted tonight but they might be pictureless. I think the laptop is about to be toast. Which sucks because we’re trying to re-do some things around the house, and finish the yard, so we really cannot afford to buy a new computer right now. Grr!

Surgery Tomorrow

Tim’s surgery is tomorrow. He’s supposed to check in at the hospital at 11:30. We’ll be dropping Hailey off at 8:00 at a friend’s house and she’ll stay the night there and then my parents (who are coming back tomorrow from my uncle’s wedding in California) will pick her up in the morning and keep her during the day till we get home. Keegan gets to come with since he freaks out if I am not near him at all times. This means that I have to bring stuff to keep him entertained while we wait. We bought him an Aquadoodle pad, a tractor that makes noises, a Viewmaster, and lots of snacks. And I’ll dig some toy cars and books out of his toybox. Hopefully that’ll be sufficient to keep him quiet. Keegan and I are staying in a hotel and it has an indoor swimming pool. Keegan has a suit but I don’t. If we get the chance, I hope to find one for myself so I can take him swimming at least for a little bit.

Yesterday I made this bag to bring Keegan’s toys, snacks, and diapers in. I used some left over fabrics from his room. I love how it came out! This is possibly the cutest fabric on earth.

I Sewed.

I was in the mood to sew today. I made two throw pillows for my living room (one still needs to be stitched shut), a pillow and blanket for Hailey’s doll, and a dress and head scarf for Hailey. My back always hurts after I sew, I guess I need to work on my posture.

Here is the unwilling model in her dress. It was so easy to make! Also, you can see my orange pillow I made today on the floor and the green one on the couch that I made a few days ago. Oh, and you can see our new couch! We haven’t started painting yet but right above Hailey’s head, you can sort of see one of the colors on the wall that I didn’t like.

A little happier now with her scarf on her head! And Keegan in the doll stroller. Oh and in the upper left corner, you can see a wee little bit of my new dryer, awww! (If we ever buy this place, I want to add on a laundry room!!)

The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly

The good:

  • I have been getting a lot of sewing done! Keegan’s room is coming together nicely. Waiting on a few last odds & ends to arrive and soon will be the big reveal!
  • My kids aren’t sick.
  • Tim is taking me out to lunch today. For Basque food!

The bad:

  • I am siiiiiiiiick. I am coughing. And coughing. AND COUGHING. I was up half the night the last few nights coughing.
  • As a result of being sick, I haven’t been to the gym in a week.
  • Tim’s back is really messed up. They’re making him have an MRI, and referring him to a spine specialist in Reno.

The ugly:

  • Me. Sigh. Since Tim’s been out sick, I decided to get a box dye to do my hair. My color jobs typically cost $80+, depending on what I have done. I thought, ‘hey! I’ll save a bunch and just do it myself!’ Now I have that lovely did-it-myself look. I don’t know, it’s just weird. No, I am not going to post a picture. I don’t feel like it, I look like hell b/c I am sick and haven’t slept much in many days. So there.
