My blog is carbon neutral

A program started in Germany called “Make it Green” with the goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. A website with a monthly 15,000 visitors causes 8 pounds of carbon dioxide emission annually due to the energy usage of computers, servers, etc. One tree can absorb 11 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. This program will plant one tree in the Plumas National Forest in northern California (which needs all the help it can get- in 2007 a fire destroyed 23,000 of trees there!) for every blog that submits their link to the site and puts a button in the sidebar. Please help me spread the word on this,  make your own blog carbon neutral AND help reforest Plumas National Forest by joining up now!

N-Viro turns biosolids into useful products

Poop: It actually IS Good For Something!

Did you know that there is a way to turn biosolids (aka sewage sludge- the leftovers after the treatment of sewage and wastewater) into soil, fertilizer, and fuel?

A company called N-Viro has figured out how to do that, and has been doing it since 1993.

I have read the entire site through and it is very interesting. I would love to raise awareness for such a great company. More cities need to start doing this! Please, take a minute and read it for yourself.

The fuel they create, called N-Viro Fuel, is an amazing alternative energy source. Obviously it is a highly renewable energy source, as they are converting waste to energy and I’m sure we’re all aware that waste is continually created. N-Viro Fuel is a ‘clean coal’- it is similar to coal in its physical characteristics. N-Viro is an opportunity fuel. Opportunity fuels are fuels that can be used to generate energy but are not usually used for this purpose. Opportunity fuels are actually a more cost-effective energy source than natural gas.

Besides their fuel, N-Viro also makes N-Viro soil, which is used agriculturally but also spans to other areas, such as landfill cover and land reclamation projects. It is actually a pretty cool process, how they convert the biomass into soil. You really should check it out for yourself at their site so you can see the pictures.

N-Viro also makes Bio-Dry, which are the solids left over after waste water treatment that is further processed to remove harmful pathogens, resulting in a safe, nutrient-rich fertilizer; and Bio-Blend, which is an accelerated compost.

Here is a video that explains some of the how’s and why’s of what N-Viro is doing. I encourage you to watch it, it is less than four minutes long and amazingly informative.
