Low Fat Ranch Dressing THAT DOESN’T SUCK!!

Yeah, that's right. You can still have salad dressing!

I know. I, too, thought it didn’t exist.

You know how low-fat dressings are always a weird texture and kind of sweet? Well, I’ve found a solution that works. AND it has protein. Yeah, I’m pretty stoked.

Here’s what you do, and I know the measurements are not exact but I’m pretty sure you can all figure it out because you’re smart. Just add amounts that make it taste good!

Puree some low-fat cottage cheese. (I don’t use fat-free because it tastes like plastic.) Add some ranch dressing mix. (My favorite is Penzey’s Buttermilk Ranch mix.) Add a little lowfat buttermilk (or some lowfat or fat free milk and a splash of vinegar) and blend until you reach the desired consistency.

That’s it. It comes out creamy, much like mayo-based dressing thanks to the cottage cheese and has a good tangy taste from the buttermilk or vinegar.

P90X… I AM STILL SICK OMFG.

Yeah.

I can’t get rid of this. I keep thinking I feel better and working out and then the next day I wake up feeling like I was hit by a truck again. My throat is sore again! I’m not even finished taking my antibiotics for strep yet! Sigh. I’m taking the day off of working out… it is Sunday after all… and if I don’t feel better tomorrow, I swear I’m gonna… I don’t know. Sit around and whine some more.

Ugh.

I miss my workouts.

P90X- on pause. And other stuff.

Yeah so… right smack in the middle of P90X, I get STREP. For my first time ever. Really?! NOW?! *sigh*

So, I’m on pause. And on antibiotics. Crappy. I’ve been taking the medicine since Friday evening and I actually woke up this morning feeling a little bit better, so hopefully I can at least get back to some walking on the treadmill tomorrow. I’m trying to still eat healthy but sometimes that takes more effort than I want to give right now. All I really want to do is sit around and blow my nose a lot. And drink tea.

The kids are also feeling a bit under the weather, though their strep tests came back negative. I can tell they’re not feeling well because they’ve been sitting silently on the couch for more than half an hour now, watching cartoons, instead of jumping around like monkeys on crack as they normally do.

As I am feeling a bit better, I’m considering taking the troops to Wal-Mart later and getting some new craft stuff. Our supplies are dwindling. It’s snowy outside, which is super fun to play in unless you have a cold. Poor kids.. what horrible timing for the snow!

Overheard this morning:

Hailey: Let’s pretend there’s a moon eclipse!

Keegan: It’s actuwee a “woonar ecwipse!

P90X quickie

Start of week 7 and I’m still sick. I’m still hanging in there with diet and workout, except instead of core and cardio and yoga, I’m doing an hour on the treadmill because I think hanging upside down will cause massive snot explosions and that’s super gross. I’m still doing the program’s toning videos though. And Kenpo because Kenpo is FUN!

AND… I hesitate to claim this because what if it sneaks back on by the end of the week when I am REALLY supposed to weigh in… but..

I’ve lost 3 pounds!!

Finally more loss on the scale. The inches I’ve lost are super awesome but seeing the number go down on the scale is magical, no matter how much you tell yourself it doesn’t matter.

P90X- Week 6. Sickness & diet philosophy

Well, I’m sick. I think I have a sinus infection. I’m probably going to head to the doctor later today to get a prescription to kick this because it’s making me angry. I did my workouts the last two days but today I’m actually taking a day off. I’ll do workouts when I’m sick unless I’m nauseous, have a pounding sinus headache, or have bronchitis. Unless one of those three things is happening, I generally find that a moderate workout actually makes me feel better… but if I push it when I’m too sick, I regret it the rest of the day. Hopefully this will be the only day and I can get back to it tomorrow. I was due to do yoga x today but with the horrible sinus headache and pressure I’ve got going on, I can’t see myself doing a downward dog without snot going everywhere. (I know.. that was a super attractive thought!)

Other than that though, I’m still doing awesome. Once I am well again, I’m going to add some treadmill workouts into my schedule because I need more cardio, I think. The toning is awesome and it definitely helps burn the fat by building more muscle.. but muscle weighs more than fat, so you don’t see it on the scale so much. Not that it’s a numbers race because, quite frankly, who cares what the scale says if you’re in good shape. The thing is, I’d like to build some endurance through cardio. That will be excellent for the hiking we intend to do this fall. And, of course, I’m hoping to shed a few more inches if I add more cardio.

Now, diet-wise… here’s a philosophy I’ve had for some time. I’ve heard it said before that nothing tastes as good as thin feels. This is only true to a certain extent. Sure, thin feels great but some foods are damn tasty and I just don’t think that it’s fair to have to choose one or the other. So enjoy the naughty things you love on occasion and in moderation. Have an insane craving for nachos and a margarita? Have it. Once, not daily. Make it a special occasion. And then bring it harder at your next workout. No big deal! You can have your occasional indulgences and still be thin too. Depriving yourself makes you miserable, so don’t do it.

Again, I’m not saying that it’s fine to eat fish & chips, enchiladas, and bacon double cheeseburgers every single day. I try to limit myself to one “cheat” meal per week- which is something I learned back in the Body For Life days. Want something super bad? Hold off til your designated “cheat” day. Maybe it’s a mental thing, I don’t know. If you tell yourself you can never ever have chili cheese fries again, you’re going to want chili cheese fries pretty much non-stop. If you tell yourself you can have chili cheese fries on Saturday at lunch if you just get through this week of healthy eating, you don’t feel like you’re missing out on anything.
